Emergency Car Kit

September is Preparedness Month....and nothing like getting prepared at the last minute!!
Since it's the last day of the month, we're soooooo on top of things.

But one item that we REALLY think is important if you're driving to school, work, etc.
is an Emergency Car Kit!!

With cooler weather right around the corner it's important to be prepared in case you get stuck in the snow, get a flat tire, or get stranded somewhere and have to wait for help.
Check out this info from WSDOT to get your started on a simple Car Kit:

This would be an easy FHE to do with your family
or to even talk about during a YW Activity -
along with maybe learning how to use the jumper cables or change a tire.

Most of all, just BE SAFE AND PREPARED!!!

And I felt some of the remarks were meant just for me, ya know?

We'll post some of our favorite quotes in the next few weeks,
but for now here are a few of the quotes that were shared on the Church's Facebook page.
Were any of these your favorite?

Deep Beauty

A quick reminder that tonight is the General Women's Meeting!! See you there!

---------------------------------------------------------------

Beauty is usually defined as your physical appearance.
And we've asked you with the Stand & Shine Beauty Challenge
to look for that beauty, the outward beauty.

Today we want to encourage you to think about another aspect of beauty as your taking on this challenge because the MOST IMPORTANT part of beauty is not defined by your body.
Elaine S. Dalton calls this "Deep Beauty."

Watch this video to listen to a great excerpt from her talk Remember Who You Are! from the April 2010 General Young Women's Meeting.

Isn't that a wonderful reminder!!!
Our beauty lies in WHO WE ARE and not just what our body looks like.
And as we build Deep Beauty, it will also show outwardly.
Here are some of the things Sister Dalton said about Deep Beauty:

Deep Beauty shines from the inside out.

Deep Beauty cannot be painted on, surgically created, or purchased.

Deep Beauty doesn't wash off.

Deep Beauty is spiritual attractiveness.

Deep Beauty springs from virtue.

Deep Beauty comes from being chaste and morally clean.

Deep Beauty is earned through faith, repentance, and honoring covenants.

We do need to accept and love our bodies. Be grateful for them.
The world wants us to be dissatisfied with how we look so that we will buy into
their ideas of beauty and fashion and happiness.

But as your take the Beauty Challenge, also remember that you have beauty inside.
A strong spirit. A unique heart and mind.
You are a daughter of God with great purpose and potential within you.

Favorite Things Friday: Pirate Party

Today is Talk-Like-A-Pirate Day!
And who wouldn't like to celebrate with a day of all things Pirate?
Here are some of our ideas to help get your pARRRRRty started!

Add a little Pirate to your wardrobe:

Wear an eye patch. (Though probably not a school. Is that against some code?)

Red and white stripes always seem to scream PIRRAAAATTEEE!!

Gold jewelry. (But don't plunder it from someone else, K?)

Put a parrot on your shoulder. Who wouldn't like someone yakking in their ear all day.

Watch a Pirate movie:

Hook (PG)

Peter Pan (G)

The Goonies (PG)
(Check with parents first...I think this has some swearing? I can't remember.)

Muppet Treasure Island (G)

Treasure Planet (PG)

The Pirate Fairy (G)

Peter Pan - the real person one (PG)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (PG-13)
(Check with the parentals about this one too since it is PG-13)

Play a Pirate game:

"Walk the Plank" by visiting a local pool with a diving board.

Go on a "Treasure Hunt" by doing a fun scavenger for random items.

See who can talk like a Pirate for the longest amount of time.

"Hit the Deck" by playing some fun card games with friends or family.

Have a "Sword Fight" by using foam pool noodles.

He Can Strengthen You

I love this quote from Elder Bednar.
It reminds us that the Atonement of Jesus Christ has two parts:

1. To atone for our sins, allowing us to repent from sin.
2. To strengthen us and heal us from circumstances or experiences that come into our lives.

(We wrote more about those two components here.)

So remember that Christ wants to not only cleanse you from sin, but help you to live life to the fullest. To be strong and full of faith. Through Christ you can do ALL things.

Remember 9/11

We just wanted to Remember 9/11 today by sharing our sympathies
with those who lost loved ones that horrible day.
We want honor those who gave their lives trying to save others
and remember the goodness in the thousands that helped during the aftermath.

Mostly, we pray for a better world.
That all of us, no matter where we live in the world, can serve and love each other
as we all seek for happiness and safety and peace.

We have the power to make a difference.
To be the good in the world.

And we will always remember those who have sacrificed so that we can do that.

Back-to-School Goals

Now that you have a week or two of school under your belt,
take some time to write down your Back to School Goals in your journal.

Is there a particular class that's going to need some extra love and attention?
Is there a hobby or sport that's going to take a lot of time?
Do you need to change what time you study your scriptures each day?

Whatever your schedule holds, in and out of school,
make sure that you're focusing on all aspects of "yourself."
See below for the three main areas we suggest making goals for,
and then keep track of your goals throughout the school year.

As published in our Autumn 2014 Issue
